What is More Is More Stitching?
A fresh approach to slow stitching, where simple stitches meet adventurous layers.More Is More Stitching is an online creative course where I’ll show you how I build my layered textile pieces using fabric, thread, colour, texture, beads, wire, lace, and all sorts of unexpected treasures.
This isn’t a traditional embroidery class. You won’t be memorizing complicated stitches or trying to recreate my finished projects. Instead, you’ll learn my process — how I choose materials, build layers, play with contrast, create movement, and decide what comes next.
Three creative projects. We’ll start with simple fabric collage and gradually explore ways to add more colour, texture, stitching, and embellishment. You’ll discover how a few very simple stitches, used in different ways, can become part of something wonderfully complex and uniquely yours.
With over four hours of instruction, short, easy-to-follow videos, and written support materials, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to experiment, stretch your creativity, and discover your own approach to slow stitching.
Whether you’re a curious beginner or an experienced stitcher ready to push beyond the familiar, there’s room for you here.
Come play with layers. Embrace the mess. Trust your instincts. And discover what happens when more really is more.
Meet The Instructor
I’m Kerry Engel, botanical artist, creative educator, and Mojo Maker behind Engelbelle. My slow stitching practice is all about colour, texture, unexpected materials, and building layers upon layers. I love exploring what happens when simple stitches meet a wonderfully messy mix of fabrics, threads, and found treasures.
Through my teaching, I share my creative process and encourage others to trust their instincts, experiment, and discover their own stitching style. For me, it’s not about perfect stitches or following the rules — it’s about curiosity, creative freedom, and always finding room for one more layer!

Curiosity is the only real prerequisite!
If you’re a beginner, I’ll guide you through four very simple stitches and variations you can use to build your own layered textile pieces. We’ll begin with simple collage and gradually explore ways to add colour, texture, thread, and all sorts of interesting embellishments.
If you’re an experienced stitcher, you’ll discover new ways to approach composition, work with contrast, and push your stitching beyond the familiar.
You don’t need to be an expert. You just need to be willing to experiment and see where the process takes you.
-
Not at all! We’ll explore four simple stitches and variations, but this isn’t a traditional embroidery class focused on mastering dozens of stitches or following a pattern.
Instead, we’ll explore how to use stitching as one of many tools for building layers, creating texture, and bringing your own ideas to life.
-
The projects you see are examples of my process, not patterns you need to copy.
I’ll show you how I begin with simple layers and gradually add fabrics, threads, colour, beads, wire, and other unexpected elements. You’ll learn how I make decisions, respond to what’s happening on the fabric, and know when to add more — or when to leave a little space to breathe.
My hope is that you’ll take these ideas and make them your own. Your finished piece should reflect your imagination, not look exactly like mine.

One of the joys of More Is More Stitching is that you can use materials you already have and gradually add to your collection.
You’ll want a selection of woven fabrics, such as cotton muslin, linen, or canvas, along with needles, threads, and scissors. From there, you can explore additional materials such as:
Threads in different colours, weights, and textures
Fabric scraps, including hand-dyed or painted fabrics
Beads, sequins, and other small embellishments
Lace, ribbons, and found textiles
Craft wire and pliers for making simple wire flowers
Acrylic paints and other materials for creating your own fabric elements
You don’t need every supply on this list to get started. Part of the fun is discovering how ordinary and unexpected materials can work together. We’ll explore different materials throughout the class, so you can experiment with what appeals to you.
-
Absolutely not!
Use what you have, repurpose old fabrics, explore your stash, and let your materials inspire you. You can follow along with the projects using similar supplies, substitute materials, or try something entirely different.
This is about creative exploration, not having the perfect collection of supplies.
-
That’s entirely up to you. You can watch a lesson and stitch for twenty minutes, spend an afternoon immersed in your project, or return to it over several days or weeks.
Slow stitching invites you to slow down, play, and enjoy the process. There is no right pace and no race to the finish line.
-
That’s exactly why we’ll begin simply.
I’ll walk you through my approach to building a piece, starting with collage and gradually adding layers. Along the way, we’ll explore contrast, movement, colour, texture, and ways to bring different elements together.
You don’t need to arrive with a fully formed idea. Sometimes the most interesting pieces emerge when you make one small decision, see what happens, and let the next step reveal itself.
-
Wonderful! That’s the whole point.
I’m sharing my process so you can develop confidence in your own creative decisions. Your fabrics, colours, stitches, and embellishments will tell a different story from mine, and that’s something to celebrate.
There is no single right way to approach this work. Give yourself permission to experiment, make a mess, change your mind, and discover what happens when you embrace more.
-
Not at all. The techniques and ideas you’ll explore can be used in all sorts of creative projects. You might create a textile artwork to frame, embellish a handmade journal, make a small piece for a card, explore textile collage, or incorporate your stitching into mixed-media work.
The class focuses on developing your creative process, so you can take what you learn and apply it to projects that excite you.
-
You’re in the right place!
Because the class is self-paced, you can fit it around your life. You don’t need to set aside a whole weekend or complete a project within a certain timeframe. Dip in when you have time, return when inspiration strikes, and let your work develop at its own pace.
